The Worldwide Announcement of Canon’s New Flagship – EOS 1D Mark IV

The Worldwide Announcement of Canon's New Flagship - EOS 1D Mark IV

I got the invitation last week for the Worldwide Announcement of Canon’s New Flagship – Canon didn’t mention what it was, I didn’t get what it was either as I was still waiting for the EOS 7D launch. However since there has been plenty of rumours going on about the EOS 1D Mark IV so it was a good bet that this is going to be it.

So there I was yesterday at KL Hilton. I think I need not elaborate much, the pictures will do the talking.

The event started with a speech from Mr Melvyn Ho, Vice President of Canon Singapore Pte Ltd.

This was followed by a speech from Mr Liew Sip Chon, President & CEO of Canon Marketing Malaysia.

By the way dear Canon, I think there should be some consistency in presentation. Mr Liew mentioned that the NAME of the camera is not to be mention but on the press kit it’s already mentioned EOS 1D Mark 4 (refer to my twitpic). And for the press kit, do note that the camera is labelled as Mark IV. πŸ™‚

After both speeches, came the introduction to the EOS “Hall of Fame”.

I shall not bore you with the profiles of the individuals here but in case you need to know who they are, from left to right : Allan Chai, Brian Fong, Eskay Lim, Joe Chan, Mr Liew S.C, Zung, Yau Choon Hiam, Steven Leong, Peter Tan and Ng Kok Leong.

Ok la ok la, coming already – here it is. The EOS 1D Mark IV coming out in a ghostly fashion.

And here’s the beauty with the EF 100mm Macro f/2.8L IS USM. πŸ™‚ Panning shot some more.

Then there’s the EOS 7D, which looks like “tumpang” (English : hitching a ride) the event. Well actually if I refer to the press kit, today is also a 7D day. πŸ™‚

The 1D, 5D and 7D – hrmm……… now they either sound like apartment number, durian or bra size. LOL. Lame joke.

EVENT = Group photo is a must! (I think you guys saw it coming la.)

After that, press conference and a session with Mr Teoh for more technical aspect of the 1D Mark IV.

πŸ™‚ As usual, press conference in Malaysia starts with a dead silence. Little me was the first one to ask – “what was the crop factor?” (ok la my question was longer than that) – it’s 1.3x, bursting the bubble that spread from the rumours of it being 1.0x full-frame. 1.3x with the APS-H sensor just as in 1D Mark III.

Here’s the beauty with the 100mm Macro f/2.8L IS USM. As Mr Teoh Peng Kee (product consultant) put it 1D Mark IV is like the Mark III, with the label changed. πŸ™‚ Of course there are other differences, such as the VIDEO button, the change on the curvature on the top of the camera.

Pointless for me to list the details (ok la I admit, the details so many – I’ll be half dead to list them all out.)

ISO Tests

Yeah yeah everyone also want to see the ISO test.

….. but Canon (Japan) has requested that the ISO test samples to be removed. πŸ™ So those who have seen it, well just keep in mind it was done with BETA firmware and the test was to satisfy the anxious souls who are so looking forward to have a PREVIEW of the flagship EOS’ ISO performance.

Anyway, you could also read up what Brad of DP Interface (who happens to be the guy in the video above) wrote about the EOS 1D Mark IV.

  1. How lucky of you to be able to have a go at the monster! I hope I will be able to play with one! Loving the 7D to bits. It’s not just tumpang-ing the event wei! :p

But the most surprising thing was the 1.3x crop factor for the Mark IV. Would have thought it would go under the FF series as well.

  2. Lucky you to get an invite! Do you know when Canon will allow reviewers to post ISO test? Once they are out of Beta and into production firmware I’m guessing?

  3. just want to know how Brad of DP Interface test the iso with the chart, i heard that he just put the chart on the floor, then shot with the Mark IV, is that the professional way to test a camera like this. Do you know the when the chart reflect by light then it will be not accuracy? ha ha, so unprofessional testing, and some more put on the site, he dun even know how the do the testing, and it really unfair to the camera. and one thing do he really have the experience to take sport picture, i really dun think he has. DP interface haha……….just a question, how much you know about camera, how much u know about photography, when you free, just refer to the dpreview, and see how professional the Dpreview.com doing testing on the camera, it is really not just hold the camera, then keep on shoot, this is not consider as testing on camera, just spend few minutes with playing around the camera, then write a lot of so called professional commend, people who is so professional like dpreview, will say that, oh no why writer from Malaysia so unprofessional, when u misuse you pen, u will kill a lot of life, please go and upgrade yourself first, dun mislead your reader. or not the Malaysian tech writer will shame on you…..thank you…

  4. EF-S lenses wonÒ€ℒt fit on the 1D Mark IV because it is APS-H, not APS-C Γ’β‚¬β€œ the cameraÒ€ℒs image sensor is larger than that found on the X0D, X00D and X000D cameras, hence the mirror, construction, etc.
