Privacy Protection Legal Terms on Facebook

Privacy Protection Legal Terms on Facebook

Every now and then I come by someone on Facebook posting a legal term on as an act to “protect their privacy” – what they don’t realize is that it doesn’t change anything, except adding a post to their status update.

Here’s an example of the supposed “legal term”.

In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention).
For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!
(Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook Wall. This will place them under protection of copyright laws. By the present communiqué, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents. The aforementioned prohibited actions also apply to employees, students, agents and/or any staff under Facebook’s direction or control. The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of my privacy is punished by law (UCC 1 1-308-308 1-103 and the Rome Statute).

Facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos as well as the information contained in your profile status updates.

Sounds good, right?

Yes of course it does, but it doesn’t do anything.

Let’s have a look at Facebook Terms and Policies

Take note of the words “Terms you agree to when you use Facebook”. Furthermore, this as agreed upon when you sign up for a Facebook account.

And in the terms page it states clearly the following.

This Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (“Statement,” “Terms,” or “SRR”) derives from the Facebook Principles, and is our terms of service that governs our relationship with users and others who interact with Facebook. By using or accessing Facebook, you agree to this Statement, as updated from time to time in accordance with Section 14 below. Additionally, you will find resources at the end of this document that help you understand how Facebook works.

So by posting “legal terms” on your Facebook wall, you’re basically disagreeing to what you agreed earlier.

But but but but my privacy

Hellooooo, welcome to the Internet. Privacy is what you keep to yourself. What you let others know, or leak to the Internet, has limited privacy. You have the following options if you’re paranoid about privacy

1. Control what you post – This is the easiest, but many people fail to do so.
2. Control what others see – social networks such as Facebook, provides privacy settings for content posted. You should spend more time on your settings.
3. If you are unable to settle point #1 and #2 – maybe you should just
a) stop posting anything
b) stay off the social networks
c) stay off the Internet

  1. I googled this topic because I needed something to clarify and show to my friends of Facebook. I’ve aligned this with “Morgan Freeman is dead” type fallacy posts I see constantly. I have decided to contribute to the internet by creating a YouTube short covering how to fact-check and use their brain, instead of being fed all of these silly internet “dumbs” , per-se. Thanks man!
