2 things I look for in a network camera – ease of setup and ease of use, the D-Link DCS-942L met both requirement and I’m pleased with the product.
Starting off, the camera portion is plastic and what I like is that it’s compact, none of those eyeball-like or bulky box design.
Here’s the view of the back, as you can see it allows RJ-45 (LAN) connectivity.
The package comes with the camera stand, power adapter and a LAN cable.
Fitting the camera on the stand was simple, just a few twist of the lock and it’s done. The pivot connecting to the base is sturdy while the connection point at the camera can be a little lose but all you need to do is twist it a little and it somehow stays in place.

What came to my surprise with this model of camera is that I wasn’t able to set it up via scanning of QR Code on mydlink Home app. The website did say that one could install it via app but this is not the case for the DCS-942L as no QR code can be found on the box content, nor on the product.
Regardless, setting up was easy and I got the camera up and running. Not only that, I later found out that the app to control this camera is mydlink Lite. You can’t add the camera via the app, what you need to do is to get the camera up and running on your network first and load the app and it will tell you which camera is available.
Setting up the device was easy, once you launch the software or app and select the device the content just streams to whatever place you’re viewing it on. I had no hiccups whatsoever, and I like that there is a running timestamp on the video.
The highest resolution available is 480p which is more than sufficient for web cam purpose. Just as with any network camera, it adjusts itself very well according to the lighting condition.
The camera works through cloud so you’re able to view the camera from wherever you are as long as you have internet connection, the delay was just about 1 – 2 seconds when I’m viewing it through 4G connection.
D-Link DCS-942L Enhanced Wireless N Day/Night Cloud Camera retails at around RM 300, definitely worth the price considering the build quality, ease of setup and how flawlessly it works.
