While Wi-Fi technology has progressed leaps and bounds, it’s still no match for the good old cable connection. Instead of running cables around the house, one cost effective option is to use Homeplugs as it established data communication through the electrical system of a home.
The Aztech HL115EP Twin Pack comes with 2 homeplugs, one to be placed at your connection source and the other is for you to connect your devices to.
There are quite a few types of Homeplug in the market, the usual homeplug occupies a socket but for the Pass-through types such as the HL115EP it occupies a socket while providing you socket so it’s a “pass through”, meaning you’re not “1 socket down” when using it.
The RJ-45 port is at the bottom of the homeplug, avoiding conflicting placements with power cables.

User Experience
Installation of the homeplug is hassle-free as it works no different from a multi-socket adapter.
My network is set to DHCP enabled so there’s no need to worry about assigning of IP address.
A homeplug improves overall network (WAN & LAN) connection for any device that’s far away from the connection source.
To illustrate the benefits of a homeplug, I did the test on my HTPC that’s placed quite far away from my Wi-Fi connection source but uses the WiFiSky long range Wi-Fi adapter that picks up Wi-Fi signals very well.
First up is the Speedtest benchmark of which the Homeplug resulted in better connection speed on my 10Mbps UniFi connection from TM. The test server was set to San Francisco.
Method | Mbps |
Homeplug | 9.12 |
Wi-Fi | 5.82 |
For the second test, I tried transferring data from my work computer to the HTPC, below are the diagrams for the test setup.
In the first run test, my work computer (A) and HTPC (B) are connected to the router via Wi-Fi signal.
In the second run of the test, I tested the transfer speed with the HTPC being connected to the network via the HL115EP Homeplug.
The result was great, I get about 4 times the transfer speed.
Method | MB/s |
Homeplug | 2.23 |
Wi-Fi | 0.585 |
The Verdict
