ASRock has been a familiar name, a brand that’s synonymous with value-for-money products. They are not only affordable but the quality is great and comes with good features. The H170M-ITX/ac is no exception, being the successor of the H97M-ITX/ac that I reviewed last year.
So this little number is pretty simple, in fact it’s actually less appealing than the H97 model. The H97 has ASRock written on the heatsink and the DIMM slots match the heatsink color but for the H170 model the heatsink is now of an orange-bronze color and no matching DIMM slot color.
Placed next to the CPU socket is the 6-phase power design and towards the edge lies the paired CPU and CHASSIS fan connector.
What surprised me most is that the H170M-ITX/ac sports a 20-pin ATX power connector, I’ve no issue about power delivery but I think it’s pretty ugly that my 24-pin ATX connector has 4 pins hanging around the corner. And ASRock, please – make it BLACK color instead of WHITE? The board now looks cheap instead of being classy.
The H170M-ITX/ac comes with PCI-E slot and 4 SATA ports (it was 5 on the H97M-ITX/ac) and what I like about this new board is that the DIMM slot uses a fixed clip on the end towards the PCI-E slot, this way you are able to remove the memory sticks without being having to worry about being blocked by the graphics card backplate.
Here’s is the list of what’s available at the I/O area
– 1 x PS/2 Mouse/Keyboard Port
– 1 x DVI-D Port
– 1 x HDMI Port
– 2 x USB 2.0 Ports (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
– 6 x USB 3.0 Ports (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
– 2 x RJ-45 LAN Ports with LED (ACT/LINK LED and SPEED LED)

Yup, you saw that right – the H170M-ITX/ac now comes with Dual RJ-45 port!
And lastly, it comes with Wi-Fi connectivity supporting IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac on Dual-Band (2.4/5 GHz) frequency.
More details available at the official product page.
The board works great, being an ITX board with H170 chip the RAM is limited to DDR4 2133 and you won’t be having any options to overclock.
The Wi-Fi signal pickup is excellent, reading the signals around the lab as it should, in fact it’s actually stronger than what I expected.
The ASRock H170M-ITX/ac motherboard retails at around RM 460, which is actually a pretty good price considering the weakened Malaysian Ringgit and GST. It still comes with Wi-Fi goodness like the previous generation board and this time it comes with dual RJ-45 port which I think is an excellent touch. Now if only there’s the SKY OC feature on this board, that’ll make it awesome!
