AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X Review

Let’s start – The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X has just entered the market and these TR4 monsters retail at RM 3,899 and RM 4,799 respectively. THE END. Kthxbai.

Oh you want to know more? Well no problem, I’ll be more than delighted to share. 😀

Do check out the unboxing video for the Threadripper Reviewer Kit if you haven’t, that’ll give you a great idea on what the package is like.

I won’t do a pictorial of package de-construction but here are the Ryzen Threadripper processors. 🙂

And how does it compare to the size of other Ryzen processors? Well they’re HUGE!

The wrench and AIO mounting bracket that works on most AM4 AIO coolers are part of the package.

Steps to install the AMD Ryzen Threadripper is quite tedious, check out the video below.

Here’s what you need to know about the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors, table taken from AMD’s Reviewer Guide.

Test Setup

For this test I used the ASUS Zenith Extreme motherboard, Apacer Blade Fire DDR4 3000 @ 3200Mhz and Fractal Design Celsius S24 AIO cooler. The cooler mounted with the provided TR4 brackets, no problem whatsoever.

Below are the CPU-Z of the processors tested, readings are at their boosted speed.

Overclocking

I was able to get both the processors to around 4Ghz range, the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X managed to hit the 4Ghz mark while the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X managed 3.8Ghz, it could boot into Windows at higher speed but it wasn’t stable enough to pass the benchmarks.

The Benchmarks

Let’s start with the Synthetic benchmarks, as you can see the Ryzen Threadripper is far ahead of the top Ryzen 7 processor.

Here’s where things get interesting, the Ryzen Threadripper isn’t too far ahead from the Ryzen 7 1800X and what we can see in the graph is that there is a software limitation where Adobe Premier Pro doesn’t seem to be able to max out the potential for the Ryzen Threadripper.

The Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X are of the same power draw, the difference between them is one has more cores while the other has greater clock speed.

Temperature wise the Ryzen Threadripper units can run really hot, bear in mind also that at present most coolers are just able to cover a portion of the processors surface.

NOTE : There’s no GAME MODE tests or benchmarks here simply because that mode is available in Ryzen Master, which unfortunately wasn’t ready at the time when the Threadripper was in the lab.

The Verdict

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X has just entered the market and these TR4 monsters retail at RM 3,899 and RM 4,799 respectively – the price premium is HUGE over the already fast Ryzen 7 1800X but it’s well worth it if you are the type that runs a whole lot of activity on a machine, like say have a couple of virtual machines running in the background while doing video editing and perhaps even throw in some gaming activity together. Why not?

For the rest of us without deep pockets, sad to say we’ll be looking at the Ryzen 5. 😛 Once again, great job AMD! You guys know what we are thinking – “The Cores Are Never Enough!”

* You guys get the hint, right? Right? It sounds like a James Bond movie title, CORES = Intel. 😛 * The number of cores on the Ryzen Threadripper and the performance gain available from it is simply awesome if the software is capable of utilizing that insane amount of cores and threads.
