Malaysia Lowest in 2007 International Privacy Ranking

The lowest ranking countries in the survey continue to be Malaysia, Russia and China. The highest-ranking countries in 2007 are Greece, Romania and Canada.
Malaysia
- No right to privacy in constitution
- No comprehensive privacy law
- Controversial internal security act allows for extensive police powers
- Interception authorised by attorney general
- Extensive use of identification scheme, mykad
- Plan to implement citizen data hub across government departments, developed by oracle corporation, including individuals background, education, and health records
- Biometric system monitors foreigners in the country
- Extensive use of CCTV with no privacy safeguards

So what does this tell you? We have a problem.
“Extensive use of CCTV with no privacy safeguards” eh? Yet we recently had a 5 year old girl who was raped, sodomized and thrown off the building. so much for CCTV…….. or was there any in the first place?
In fact as I walk around shopping complexes and various office buildings, I noted that their CCTV doesn’t cover the right angle. I do come by a building where the CCTV doesn’t totally cover the angle that allows clear view of who entered their Mailbox room. So imaging, one could just enter the Mailbox room and drop nasty things and still get away. How did I know it doesn’t cover important angles? Believe it or not, I was told by the management.
