As for fanless.... well, my cpu (phenom2 720) may not be the hottest around but its not the coldest either. I had an athlon2 before it, tdp on 65W (720 is 95) and i'm pretty sure the TX3 would have kept a much lower temp with it Oh, when the case fans are on the air flow is pretty good^^

I didn't face any head issue with the TX-3 on both installation and performance. I prefer 120mm fan but the 90mm just joins the choir of my other 120mm and GTX470 fans. :) btw I wouldn't even think of running it fanless (passive cooling) on hotter processors. :D how was your casing air flow?

Of course it was inacceptable. Thank god together with it i bought a noctua fan, the latest super silent (-and expensive - 19€, more than the cooler itself) fan and i placed it on the topper side of the case, right above the cooler. Well, as i am writing now in exactly the same conditions of before except that fan (which gave NO noise at all... we are talking about the famed after all) and now its swinging between 40 and 45°. IMHO it proves, again, that this cooler is not cut out to work totally fanless - it needs a fan nearby. Not the noisy stock one, to be mounted on the cooler, but a nearby fan is mandatory. Overall i still recommend this cooler as a great, cheap possibility in building a silent pc. Plus, unlike other wannabe-passive cooler like the ninja etc its relatively small and dont even get close to the ram. I would like to try the scythe mini ninja tough, *maybe* that could be better.... but its 75/100% more expensive, tough. Installation was a NIGHTMARE.... both the main cooler and the fan are a nuisance. Especially the fan, which blocking clip are downright retarded. Anyway - i tried first with fan and then fanless keeping it fanless now) and the result are not extraordinary, maybe i'm using a hotter cpu, dont know. Anyway, with a OCed phenom 2 720 i got with the fan around 35 idle but it was quite noisy. Not annoyingly so, it was a reasonable background noise, but you could definitely tell it was a fan and i was aiming for a very silent pc. So i went fanless and there started the problems: on true idle (pc started but no software in background it reach 45°, but with a browser opened and emule in background quicly climbed to 65° (and i'm using asus cool'nd quiet software to keep it undervolted while in low use). What's strange is that once i started a serious game, going on full but starting (trough a rheobus) the case fans it went back to 45°. IMHO it means that while it works fanless (after all 65° is not a damaging temp for a cpu) it was definitely NOT designed to work in that way, as the huge drop in temp occured once the case's fans were started shows. This cooler simply need a fan to keep the nearby air cool. Plus, i'm a bit worried about what will happen once summer starts.... its winter now, with a 21° temp in my room: what will happen when it will jump to 30°? I fear i 'll have to buy a silent fan to replace the stock one of cooler master. Still, this is a 15€ cooler so i can still recommend it to peoples interested in cheap, efficient AND silent cooling.
