Sub noob, i agree with you that the cost will raise if they produce a card with custom 3rd party cooler.. All is about contract problem, if one company want to produce a 9800gtx with custom cooler, then they have to take the risk to raise a price of the card..

I think that is one of the reason they did not produce any 3rd party cooler and whole lot more reason

i was saying that, why the Nvidia’s high-end cards are using the reference cooler only.
i believe there is some restrictions that its partners are not allowed to change the design.

Sometimes they just stick with the reference cooler because they also need to do research that cost a lot money also to produce a better solution.. Usually they only make 3rd party cooler depend on the models.. I would say a high demand gc usually get 3rd party cooler..

i dont work in the industry but im assuming its for manufacturing purposes. u know how higher volume = lower cost per unit. keeps costs down in the early stages. until the manufacturers themselves come up with different/more effective forms of coolers.

ati/nvidia then continue on to research more advanced gc’s, leaving the cooling solutions to the experts. the 3rd party manufacturers.

@kyLL, yes, i am referring to the cooler. i really dun understand, even ATi 2900XT has a IceQ cooler, but Nvidia 8800GTX only available in reference cooler.
furthermore, 3870X2 has non-reference design too. but for 9800GX2, i guess no people are to split that 2 pcbs.
i can tell that manufacturers are more innovative and creative in making ATi cards.
